Surgery After Care Instructions

Ø           EXERCISE:  Restrict your pet's activity for the next 7 days.  No running, jumping, swimming or bathing for TWO WEEKS.  Swimming or bathing will increase the risk of infection and cause the incision to open.

Ø           INCISION:  You should check your pet's incision every day until it is healed (7-10 days).  DO NOT allow your pet to lick or chew at the incision. There will be a little tenderness and some nausea.  An occasional vomit for a day or two is considered normal but should stop by 48 hours.

Ø           SUTURES:  Absorbable sutures were used and do not need to be removed.  The surgery site may show a little bruising. Several layers of sutures may feel like a lump under the skin to you.  That is normal.

Ø           ANESTHESIA & PAIN MEDICATION: Your pet might still be groggy (especially pets that had surgery later in the afternoon).  Anesthesia and injectable pain medications make them feel cool, so please keep them indoors in a warm, protected, quiet place.

Ø           FOOD:  Wait until your pet is completely awake before offering food or water.  Then offer only small portions of food the first day after surgery.

Ø           AFTER CARE:  If you have any concerns about your pet's condition within 14 days after surgery, please contact the Lewis Clark Animal Shelter at (208) 746-1623.  The Shelter has a veterinarian on staff on Wednesday and Thursday FROM 9:00 –  3:30  (two days post surgery) should your pet need immediate follow up care.  Your pet will be examined AT THE LEWIS CLARK ANIMAL SHELTER and provided any post surgical medical care at no cost on those days.

Ø           PLEASE NOTE:  As stated in your signed waiver – we are a MOBILE HIGH VOLUME – LOW COST spay/neuter service that can not provide 24 hour follow up care.    In the rare occurrence that your  pet has an adverse reaction or complication related to this surgery and must be examined locally or after hours by a veterinarian, you are responsible for all costs incurred.

Other Services

We  offer microchip identification to all pet owners.  A microchip, the size of a grain of rice, is injected under the animal's skin between the shoulder blades.  Each chip has a unique number that is registered with a national database along with the pet owner's address and phone number.  The microchip can be read by scanners that are currently used by most animal organizations and veterinary clinics.

Microchipping              $15
